Harlem, NY USA

The Black Thought Project partnered with Media 2070 to design and activate the first Black Future Newsstand in Harlem, New York for Juneteenth 2023. Guided by the question, What does a media that loves Black people look and feel like in a future where reparations are real? the Black Future Newsstand features magazines, mini-zines, newspapers, art and other forms of media owned and published by Black folx representing the diversity of the African diaspora. The outside of the interactive newsstand features a Black Thought Wall, inviting Black people to write what they love about themselves, their visions for a media that loves Black people and the stories they long to share and read.

Alicia Walters, creator of the Black Thought Project facilitated the process and planning of five activations and companion programming across Harlem including the Museum Mile Festival, Schomburg LitFest, a reception and zinemaking workshop in partnership with The Africa Center, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and a diverse set of co-creators spanning arts, culture and reparations.
